On her seventh album, Texas blues singer-guitarist Carolyn Wonderland teams up with Ray Benson, frontman of Asleep at the Wheel, who serves as producer, co-writer of two songs, backing guitarist and head of her record label, Bismeaux Productions.

Benson seems to just let Wonderland be itself, and the result is a varied collection that begins with the lap steel workout "Misunderstood" and ends with the ballad "Feed Me to the Lions," on which she's accompanied by the Tosca String Quartet, underscoring her blues-rock qualities.
In between, there's plenty of room for her tasteful, sometimes wild guitar playing, both on the originals and on covers like a version of the Johnny Winter song "Still Alive and Well."

She has a powerful, rhythmic voice whose phrasing, if not her timbre, sometimes recalls that of Janis Joplin, perhaps because they come from the same part of the world.
While rockers are clearly a comfort zone for her, Wonderland also seems at home in quieter songs, especially the slow blues "Bad Girl Blues" and "I Don't Want to Fall for You," which sounds like a lost song from the Tin Pan Alley days.
This versatility serves her well and makes me want to hear her next project.
