Texas war schon immer ein fruchtbarer Boden für bahnbrechende Bluesgitarristen. Stevie Ray Vaughan kam ebenfalls aus dieser Tradition des Lone Star State und injizierte ihr einen guten Schuss Rock-Adrenalin. Seine Helden hießen nicht nur Freddy und Albert King, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson und Lonnie Mack, sondern Vaughan war auch stark von den bombastischen Sounds eines Jimi Hendrix beeinflusst und coverte einige von dessen bekanntesten Titeln.

Stevie wurde am 3. Oktober 1954 in Dallas geboren und trat als Bluesgitarrist in die Fußstapfen seines älteren Bruders Jimmie. Stevie schmiss die Highschool, zog 1972 nach Austin und spielte in den Bands Krackerjack, The Nightcrawlers und bei Paul Ray & The Cobras, bevor er mit dem singenden Bassisten W.C. Clark und der Sängerin Lou Ann Barton die Triple Threat Revue gründete. Mehrere Mitglieder verließen die Gruppe binnen eines Jahres, darum formierten Stevie und Lou Ann die nach Otis Rushs klassischer '58er-Cobra-Single benannte Band Double Trouble. Barton ging kurz darauf zu Roomful Of Blues; dies bedeutete, dass Stevie Anfang der 80er-Jahre der einzige Frontmann von Double Trouble war.

Der frühere Atlantic-Records-Boss Jerry Wexler war von den Jungs so begeistert, dass er ihnen einen Auftritt beim Montreux Jazz Festival 1982 verschaffte – eine seltene Ehre für eine Band ohne Plattenvertrag. David Bowie sah Vaughan dort und engagierte ihn für sein 1983er-Album 'Let's Dance'. Vaughans Band hatte im L.A.-Studio von Jackson Browne ein Demoband aufgenommen, das in die Hände des legendären Produzenten John Hammond kam, der ihnen zu einem Plattenvertrag bei Epic Records verhalf. Double Trouble bestand inzwischen aus Vaughan, dem Bassisten Tommy Shannon und dem Schlagzeuger Chris Layton; ihr reduzierter, kompakter Texas-Triosound sprang förmlich aus den Rillen ihrer 1983er-Debüt-LP für Epic, 'Texas Flood'. Der Titelsong war der '58er-Duke-Klassiker von Larry Davis, und Stevies eigenes rockendes Pride And Joy gehörte zu den Höhepunkten der Platte – ein Musterbeispiel seines schnellen, aber dennoch erdigen Gitarrenspiels und seines langgezogenen Gesangs.

Vaughan und Double Trouble legten ein Jahr später mit 'Couldn't Stand The Weather' nach, einer weiteren hoch gelobten Hit-LP. Drogenmissbrauch stand Vaughans Karriere mehrmals im Weg, aber die Band veröffentlichte 1985 'Soul To Soul' und im Jahr darauf 'Live Alive'. 1989, nachdem Vaughan clean war, folgte das Meisterwerk 'In Step'. Außerdem spielte er 1990 ein Album mit seinem Bruder Jimmie ein, 'Family Style'.

Stevie Ray Vaughan kam am 27. August 1990 auf tragische Weise bei einem Hubschrauberabsturz nach einem Auftritt im Alpine Valley Music Theatre ums Leben, wo er Teil eines All-Star-Line-up mit Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy und Robert Cray gewesen war. Verglichen mit den unzähligen Stevie-Ray-Epigonen, die bis heute auf der Szene vertreten sind, wird er nie in Vergessenheit geraten.
