This album celebrates a groundbreaking event of 1962, the launch of the first telecommunications satellite Telstar on July 10, a multinational project involving the United States, Britain and France that revolutionized transatlantic television broadcasting, telephone and other communications and helped bring the world closer together. Within weeks, the event had inspired the British band The Tornados to record Joe Meek's iconic instrumental composition and production "Telstar", which became the UK's number one in September and stayed there for five weeks. They were inducted into the US Hot 100 when they were number 1 in the UK and rose to number 1 in the Christmas week. This collection includes almost all of the Billboard Hot 100 records from that week and provides a fascinating and moving snapshot of the music scene at the end of an important and optimistic year.
