Cowabunga! After listening to this LP, you may think we're still in 1962. But, think again! This is 1982. . . Now ask yourself, "What's happening? . . ." It's the Southern California surf music revival! I prefer to call it the real "New Wave." Wave as in "Hang Ten," "Pier Shootin," and long boards by Hobie.

Instrumental surf music can trace its roots back to 1961 and to Dick (King of the Surf Guitar) Dale. It was his style of instrumental music that was given the label "Surf Music" by those who used to stomp down to the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa to dance to the surfer's beat. Vocal surf music came about when the Beach Boys lyrically described the California sur-fing scene and took it nationwide. But as fate would have it, this new California sound took a wipe out in 1964 when four ho-dads from Liverpool, England sang "I Want To Hold Your Hand". It seemed that the British Invasion has conquered Surf Music and driven it into oblivion.

In 1977, many ears perked up with the invasion of New Wave and Punk music to the American scene. Hard core surf music fans could pick out a surfer's beat in some of this music as well as surf guitar sounds, reverb and all. Keying-in on these signs, several new surf bands surfaced. The Surf Punks mixed the surf scene with the punk sound. Soon other groups emerged such as the Surf Raiders, Jon & The Nightriders, The Packards, The Wedge, The Evasions, Belair Bandits and the Toons. Even Dick Dale has made a reap-pearance. A Surf beat '80 revival concert was held at the Santa Monica Civic, and all of a sudden the revival was in full swing. Albums were released, original surf bands reformed and local clubs opened their doors to this "nouveau" surf sound.

All the aforementioned surf revival groups play their own style of California surf music and each group is unique in its own sound. These groups have been rockin' the beach scene for almost three years now. The surf revival movement is building up momentum along the coast of Southern Calfornia and also across the sea as far away as Europe, Asia and the shores of Peru. When you really think about it, California surf music never died. It just sat in the background and waited for the right time and the right groups to come back.
That time is now! A new generation of people are now taking hold of the California beach sound and making it their own. Surf's Up!
