In the late fifties and early sixties, songs appeared in the states that must be regarded as precursors of soul. Set in the midtempo range and seasoned with ingredients from pop, R&B, country, gospel and doo-wop, the pieces circled eternally around lost loves and broken hearts, regardless of the skin colour and gender of the respective performers. They boomed on the radio, but especially at school dance events and block parties.

Surprisingly, a little more than a decade later, a club scene was created in Belgium around exactly these songs. She called herself Popcorn after a play by James Brown. Similar to the British Northern Soul scene, the popcorn DJs wanted to conjure up rare, fresh and unknown songs out of their suitcases.

This compilation focuses on 20 relatively R&B-heavy songs by Varetta Dillard, Jesse James, Kitty White, Johnny Wells, Anna King, Ray Rush and Simone Dina among others. At the beginning of the seventies, they caused lasting enthusiasm in the popcorn scene and are therefore regarded as secret hits.
