Pop in Germany, Vol. 1

When the delusional mutates into a dog of baskervilles, a yellow river turns into strangers' eyes and a beautiful daydream turns into a harsh order to put your bed on the street - when all this confusion happens to you, it's worth a German hit. Whether rock 'n' roll, surf or twist - during the 60s and 70s the German record companies always had an ear for music fans who didn't speak English. And, understandably, a second one, in order to be able to better monitor the hoped-for additional jingling in the cash register. In plain language: Whenever popular hits reached local coasts from the USA or the United Kingdom, potential buyers should also understand what was sung there. The procedure worked out: As soon as promising titles climbed up the American or British hit lists, word tested lyricists between Flensburg and Garmisch pointed the styli, German-speaking interpreters oiled the vocal chords. Their common order: Ran to the originals, cover versions carpenter!

What came out is - sorted according to genre - already to be heard on CDs: 'Surf In Germany' (Bear Family Records BCD 16211) has dedicated itself in the past to the musical surfers, 'Twist In Germany' (BCD 16186) to the hipwacklers at risk of biting - with together 45 sounding diaphragm attacks. An Abigail Beecher turned into an Abigail Beecher, the blockbuster Mausi Müller, She Rides With Me just a moment ago No Alibi or Twist Everybody the diet decree Twist is good for the line. But all this was only a slight - albeit already wonderfully curious - preliminary skirmish at the beginning of the Golden Sixties, in the so-called pre-beat (les) era. The full broadside, however, that was still pending. Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, the Fab Four and Manfred Mann, the Moody Blues, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Simon &, Garfunkel and countless others - they all had to come to get their Germanic blueprints. Protestsongs and 4/4-Beat were doctored, Entertainment-Pop and Flower Power. And at the turn of the decade towards the 70s, paranoid even hit one of the ultimate UK hard rock hammers, which - who would have been more suitable ?! - Cindy &, Bert buttoned up. A name that signals the program. Because the record companies generally didn't let themselves be ragged about the list of executors with German-speaking interpreters: Mary Roos, Bernd Spier, ex-Rattle (and The Witch singer) Henner Hoier, Manuela, Drafi Deutscher, Nina &, Mike, the later top producer Jack White - celebrities were on duty when it came to breathing Germanic flair into international song hits.

It was always particularly curious when the brush was consistently brushed against the grain. Already some time before the stunning combi Cindy &, Bert/Black Sabbath it had set true splendour combinations: When, for example, the pug-fairy, poodle-dragging Jacob Sisters were set on the intimate soul of the Supremes, or when the Federal Schmacht specialist Anita Traversi suddenly saw herself released for an attempt at the Rolling Stones. For the fact that a Beatles and David Garrick editor named Helmut Schmidt was not the chancellor in the flesh, one had to be almost grateful. Schmidt, a man of many singles and no countable hits, represents a whole series of singing second league clubs. Because the strategy of the record companies ran on two tracks: The US and UK hits, which had been converted into German, did not only serve as food for the already mentioned, established stars, they were also a welcome vehicle to help newcomers, unknowns and those who have been romping in vain on the (success) ladder for some time. Motto: Once the text has been transferred, it covers itself - and perhaps even brings warm rain through the cold kitchen. Heinz Harden, the protest couple Christopher &, Michael, Curd Borkmann, Olaf King, Boris Brown, Holger Stern, Ingo Blankenbourg, the former Manuela pianist (5 Dops) Buddy Caine alias Joachim Salg - despite various releases, the term 'hit parade' remained a foreign word for all of them, combos like the Black Stars, Four Kings or the rat catchers didn't fare any better. Boy (also: Bert) Berger had at least been allowed to sniff chart air for a short time at the side of Michael Holm (as Missouris).

Nevertheless, most performers only now, more than 30 years after the first release of their cover versions, slide onto the playing surface of a CD. Pop in Germany' makes it possible and at the same time fulfils fan wishes that have been expressed for a long time. The 'reconstructed originals' that have been unearthed from the archives are currently among the most sought-after (vinyl) objects of desire on the local collector's scene, along with special individual interpreters and entire labels. For the rare dog of Baskerville, for example, three-digit DM amounts are regularly claimed - and also printed off. And, ask Nina &, Mike, what will be in seven years?

Pophistorisch sehr interessant

Großartige Zusammenstellung von deutschen Versionen englischsprachiger Musikklassiker. Nicht nur pophistorisch sehr interessant, sondern auch sehr gute Interpretationen, die außerdem viel Spass machen.
