Some names in music history don’t shine from the stage lights but from the tiny run-out grooves of vinyl. Bob Jones was such a name. A perfectionist, a collector, an eccentric – and one of the silent heroes behind countless legendary recordings. As a mastering specialist, he gave records the brilliance that made them timeless. Elvis Presley, Duane Eddy, countless artists from Decca, Ace, RCA, and Bear Family – they all trusted his ear and dedication.

This album is a departure from standard Country collections: it takes you straight back into the smoke-filled Honky Tonks of 1950s America. Pulled deep from the RCA Victor vaults, these 16 tracks revive the raw, unfiltered energy of Hillbilly Bop – so vivid you can almost hear the glasses clinking and the floors shaking under the dancers’ boots. Dim the lights, turn up the stereo, and you’re right there.

By the mid-1950s, elegant ballroom sounds had given way to the sharper, harder edges of Honky Tonk – a no-frills style inspired by Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell. That spirit is alive here: Jack Turner’s driving Walking A Chalk Line, Charline Arthur’s powerful Burn That Candle and What About Tomorrow, Lee Bell’s blend of swing and Texas country (Beatin’ Out The Boogie, Get Ready With Those Tears), and the Davis Sisters’ fiery Rock-A-Bye Boogie.

Add Janis Martin, the “female Elvis,” with Love Me To Pieces, Wade Ray with the almost rock-flavored I Need A Good Girl Bad, Curtis Gordon, Eddie Marshall, Bob King, Jack Tucker, and the heartfelt Is It True from songwriter Melvin Endsley – all backed by legendary session players like Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer, Jerry Byrd, and Buddy Harman.

For collectors, this is gold: many of these sides were long locked away on rare singles, virtually impossible to find. Now they are finally available again – restored, compiled, and contextualized in a richly documented booklet.

Bob Jones

Bob Jones, Mastering Engineer, Plattensammler, Labelbesitzer und walisischer Exzentriker starb 2009. Der junge Jones kam nach London und bekam einen Job als Ingenieur bei Decca Records. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus Madrid, wo er für eine spanische Plattenfirma gearbeitet hatte, begann Bob für Pye Records zu arbeiten, wo er u.a. für die neu gegründeten Charly Records und Ace Records arbeitete. Er wechselte zu den CTS Studios in Wembley, wo er u.a. Veröffentlichungen für Bear Family Records meisterte und seinen Ruf für Qualität bestätigte. RCA nutzte auch Bobs Fähigkeiten beim Mastering auf zahlreichen Elvis-Veröffentlichungen, darunter die ersten beiden Bände von'The Essential Elvis', wobei sein Beitrag auf den Albumcovern gewürdigt wurde.

Nach CTS wurde Bob von Ace-Chef Ted Carroll gebeten, Gründungsmitglied von Sound Mastering zu werden. Dort meisterte er weiterhin Produkte für Ace sowie verschiedene andere spezialisierte Labels wie Rockstar, Bear Family und Magnum Force. Als großer Fan von Elvis Presley und Duane Eddy hatte er das Privileg, das Produkt beider Künstler zu beherrschen.
