Torment was formed in late 1985 by Simon Brand and Kevin Haynes. Simon Brand had attended a concert in Bristol earlier that year by The Joint Jumpers, a rock band fronted by Kevin Haynes. The two guys kept in touch. Simon Brand was no longer active in the rock scene, having been asked to leave Frenzy the year before, and Kevin Haynes was also looking for an opportunity to form a new musical group. Thus, a new band was born. Lacking other options, they asked Sean Holder, who also played with the Joint Jumpers, to fill the vacant spot on doghouse bass. The only thing missing was a band name, which was eventually found on side 1 of Robot Riot's classic 12'' EP, a recording from Simon Brand's days with Frenzy: TORMENT. Torment's musical legacy has much more to offer than just four brilliant albums and the excellent Mystery Men EP, all recorded in a period of less than five years. The band offers an alternative path through the world of psychobilly, avoiding lyrical or musical stereotypes. The trio has always been willing to experiment and has never been afraid to try new technologies. Their unique sound, individuality and forward-thinking attitude made the group one of the most influential, interesting and best bands ever to emerge in the 80s.
