The recordings for The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus were made on 10 and 11 December 1968 and were originally intended for a TV special. However, the film and soundtrack were not released until 1996.

Besides Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Brian Jones and Bill Wyman, who led through the evening and played songs from their album Beggars Banquet, a few prominent colleagues were invited to the circus show. Among others The Who, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton, Jethro Tull , Mitch Mitchell and Marianne Faithfull were present.

Richards, Lennon, Clapton and Mitchell also played some songs together as Supergroup The Dirty Mac.

Die Rolling Stones kamen kurz nach den Beatles, obwohl es sie schon einige Zeit gab. Sie blieben hinter den Beatles, den braven, wohlerzogenen Jungs von nebenan, als genaues Pendant stets auf dem zweiten Rang. Sie waren immer umstritten. Skandale pflastern ihren Weg. Rauschgift und Exzesse, wilde Schlägereien und sagenumwobene Orgien kennzeichnen Mick Jagger, Keith Richard, Charlie Watts und Bill Wyman - zu einem Teil auch Mick Taylor, der nach dem Tode Brian Jones dessen Platz übernahm und erst vor kurzer Zeit ausgestiegen ist.

Musikalisch kommen die Rolling Stones vom Blues und ein wenig vom Jazz, den sie aber schon früh mit Rockelementen versetzten. Rauh und hart war ihre Musik schon immer. Die Rolling Stones wurden jedoch nie so stilblind, wie die Beatles es waren, sie ließen sich im Gegenteil eher von den Jungs prägen. Als diese mit ihrer Softnummer „Yesterday“ die Popwelt auf den Kopf stellten, zogen die Rolling Stones blitzschnell mit einer Streichnummer nach. Als die Beatles meinten „All You Need Is Love', sang Mick Jagger seinen Fans süß ins Ohr „We love You'.

Nach dem Splitting der Beatles übernahmen die Rolling Stones die Herrschaft im Rock-Paradies endgültig. 1975 unternahmen die Rolling Stones ihre achte Tournee durch die USA - die erste seit 1972. Sie begann in Baton Rouge, führte über Jacksonville am 2.8. und ging von dort aus weiter nach Mexiko, Brasilien, Venezuela, wo die Mammut-Tour am 31.8. in Caracas beendet war. 95% der verfügbaren Tickets (1,5 Mill.) waren in 8 Stunden verkauft.
