Yves Montand was born as Ivo Livi on 13.10.1921 in Monsummano Terme, Italy. When the fascists took power in Italy, the family emigrated to France. During the Great Depression, he kept his head above water with odd jobs. In 1938, he first appeared as a singer in nightclubs under the name Yves Montand. After the war, he went to Paris, where he performed in the then-popular music halls. Édith Piaf saw him at the Théâtre de lÉtoile and hired him for her concerts.

In 1946, Yves Montand got his first film role. In 1951 he married the actress Simone Signoret. Through the 1953 film Wages of Fear, Yves Montand became famous worldwide. He played alongside stars such as Romy Schneider and Marilyn Monroe. In addition to acting, he regularly released records that were successful both in France and internationally.

Yves Montand was one of the greats of French chanson. Titles like Les feuilles mortes and C'est si bon are classics of the genre. His duet Incurably Romantic with Marilyn Monroe from the film Let's Make Love is unforgettable.

Als hemdsärmeliger Troubadour der Nachkriegszeit besang er einst „La Vie en Rose" und „C'est si bon": Yves Mon-tand (Yvo Livi), 1921 in Italien geboren. Seine Eltern mußten vor den italienischen Faschisten flüchten und kamen nach Marseille, wo sie mit ihren 7 Kindern in Armut lebten. Schon mit 11 Jahren mußte Yves die Schule verlassen, um Geld zu ver-dienen.

Er wurde Ober, Barmann, Friseur, Docker und später ... Sänger und Film-schauspieler. Eine eigenartige Karriere! Als er 1944 im Pariser ABC-Theater sang, lernte er Edith Piaf kennen. „Nach dem Krieg werden sich die Menschen nach Liebe und Romantik sehnen", sagt sie ihm, „bereite dich darauf vor. Besing die Liebe, besing Paris!" Dieser Ratschlag war Gold wert.

Er verstand ihn und wurde von nun an mit seinen „chansons d'amour" weltberühmt. 1945 begann dann für den Sänger Montand eine zweite Karriere: Er wurde Schauspieler, und ohne zu übertreiben kann man heute
sagen, daß er zu den besten der Welt gehört. Denken Sie nur an „Lieben Sie Brahms,", „Z", „Das Geständnis", „Lohn der Angst" und nicht zu vergessen, „Let's make Love" mit Marylin Monroe. Über diese Partnerin sagte er: „Sie ist eine dicke Bäuerin mit Chanel Nr. 5 — der Traum eines jeden Burschen."

Trotzdem ist er seit 25 Jahren glücklich mit Simone Signoret verheiratet. Der Schauspieler Montand hat aber den Sänger nicht ver-drängt und heute noch erfreut er uns mit poetischen Chansons von Louis Ara-gon, Charles Aznavour, Georges Moustaki und Jacques Prevert.
