"The Mamas & The Papas"

The Mamas and Papas produzierten Musik, die für einige der Inbegriff von erstklassigem Folk-Rock war, eine perfekte Verschmelzung von kalifornischem Beat und Greenwich Village-Melodie. Doch trotz ihrer Anfänge in der New Yorker Folk-Club-Szene der frühen sechziger Jahre und ihrer engen Verbindung zu den Lovin' Spoonful verdankt der Musikstil der Mamas und Papas wenig der amerikanischen Folk- und Blues-Tradition und war eher ein ausgeklügeltes Produkt klugen Pop-Denkens seitens des Produzenten-Manager Lou Adler.

Seine Politik war es, ihren süßen Gesangssound mit einem Rockbackground zu verbinden und sie in Bezug auf ihr Hippie-Image zu vermarkten, das zwar unter Solisten recht verbreitet, in Gruppen aber fast unerhört war. Der größte Teil des Materials der Mamas und Papas wurde von John Phillips (geboren am 30. August 1941 in Parris Island, South Carolina) und seiner Frau Michelle (geborene Gilliam, geboren 1944 in Kalifornien) geschrieben, die sich gut mit Cass Elliott (Alexandria, Virginia, 19. September 1943) und Denny Doherty (Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1941) harmonisierten. Ihr erster Hit war `California Dreamin' ' (Dunhill, 1966), der Scott McKenzies 'San Francisco' als Popularisator der Flower-Power-Philosophie konkurrierte.

Ein Dutzend weiterer Hits folgten in den nächsten zwei Jahren, darunter "Monday Monday Monday", "I Saw Her Again", "Creeque Alley" und ein Revival von "Dedicated To The One I Love". Aber die Gruppe kam nicht voran und nach einer Weile begannen ihre Platten Fußgänger zu klingen, zu sehr wie die Ray Conniff Coverversionen ihrer Songs. 1968 trennten sie sich schließlich. Cass Elliott und Denny Doherty gingen solo, mit unterschiedlichen Erfolgsgraden. John machte das faszinierende Soloalbum The Wolfking of LA, dann mit Michelle in das Rockjet-Set.
