The Mamas & The Papas Collected (2-LP, 180g Vinyl, Audiophile Pressing)

The Mamas & The Papas were founded by the married couple Michelle and John Phillips (formerly of The New Journeymen). They were joined by founding member Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot, who had both previously played with The Mugwumps. Initially, the newly formed band wanted to call themselves The Magic Circle, before the final decision was made in favour of The Mamas & The Papas.

The band were inspired by the Hells Angels, who refer to their female members as ‘Mamas’. Within just four years, the band released five studio albums, which yielded seventeen singles, six of which even made it into the Billboard Top Ten. The Mamas & The Papas have now sold 40 million albums worldwide, which is why the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 in recognition of their contributions to the music industry.

Their first single, ‘Go Where You Wanna Go’, was released in 1965. Their second single, ‘California Dreamin’’, was released later that same year and immediately topped the charts. Their album ‘You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears’ was released in 1966 and remains their only number one album in the Billboard charts. ‘Monday, Monday’, the third and final single from their debut album, finally secured the band’s global breakthrough and remains their only number one single to this day.

In 1966, The Mamas & The Papas recorded their second, self-titled studio album. Following its release, the album reached number four in the US – in Germany it peaked at number 14. The first single from this album was ‘I Saw Her Again’, followed by ‘Words Of Love’ and ‘Dancing in the Street’ as the second and third singles respectively. ‘Deliver’ was released in the autumn of 1966 and featured the singles ‘Look Through My Window’, ‘Dedicated To The One I Love’ and ‘Creeque Alley’. Another single, ‘Glad To Be Happy’, followed, which did not appear on any album.

Mama Cass Elliot later embarked on a successful solo career, associated with hits such as ‘Make Your Own Kind Of Music’ and ‘It’s Getting Better’. *Collected* features all the hits and milestones from The Mamas & The Papas, as well as from Mama Cass Elliot, and, with 64 tracks, offers a superb overview of their most important and finest works.
