The Knickerbockers: Jerk And Twine Time (LP)

(Line) 10 tracks - Re-issue of the original 1966 'Challenge' LP Stereo

I met Buddy Randell and the "Knickerbockers" strictly by accident while performing in the Albany-Schenectady area. I had just finished one show, which I'll have to admit was a catastrophe, mainly be-cause it was one of those "spur of the moment" dates which allows a person no time to rehearse with the band. The group didn't know any of my songs so I tried some of theirs. When this didn't work, I just faked it with a guitar which I can't play. When I arrived at the University Twist Palace in Albany, the same problem arose. The group called "The Knickerbockers," who I had never heard of, were already on stage and I was due to go on aty minute. The M.C. introduced me and I said to myself "here goes nothing." I did some songs ranging from soft, mood music to "rip it up" rock and roll, and to my surprise, the "Knickerbockers" never missed a note or beat. I have never heard a more polished and quick-to-learn group for I did three or four numbers which I'm sure they had never heard, much less ever played. When I got back to New York, I called be Johnson of Challenge Records in Hollywood, for wham I both record and produce. Joe gave me the go-ahead to sign the "Knickerbockers" and record them in New York. I took the next train back to Albany, only to find that they had finished there and were playing in some other area —no one knew just which area.

After calling just about every booking agent in New York, I found "The Knickerbockers" playing in Lake George, New York. I watched their show which contained carbon copy sounds of The Beatles, The Beach Boys. The Four Seasons and for a kicker, many songs in their own unique style which their faithful fans call "Knickerbockerism." I say faithful fans because when the boys finish a gig in one town and move on to another, if it's not too as away, the kids follow them as if they were 'Tour Pied Pipers." Individually the four "Knickerbockers" are as follows:

Buddy Randell, who plays the saxaphone, started the group and is the leader. Buddy is 22 years old and hails from Dumont, New Jersey. He lives on Knickerbocker Road, which needless to say, is where the group got their name. Buddy was one of the original "Royal Teens" and was a co-composer of "Short Shorts" which won for him a Broadcast Music Incorporated Song Writer Award. He first hit the road at the early age of 15. Since then, Buddy has played all over the United States including Las Vegas and has also appeared 011 the Ed Sullivan Show. One thing that gassed me was watching him play two saxes at the same time. Buddy says "I can't afford another mouth to feed, so I have to play two horns.'

Jimmy Walker plays the drums and vocalizes at the same time. (Try it some time.) He is 23 years old and was born in the Bronx, New York City. Jimmy, along with Buddy, does a lot of the lead vocalizing for the "Knickerbockers," and sings the lead on their first Challenge release—"All I Need Is You."

Johnny Charles plays the bass and really makes it talk. He also sings the falsetto high on many of their songs. John is 22 years old and comes from Bergenfield, New Jersey. He has been playing the bass since he was 14. He is the tallest member of the group at six feet two.

Beau Charles, Johnny's brother, is the youngest member of the "Knicks" at 20. He picks a mean guitar and sings bass. At rehearsal, the gang depends on Beau for their chord changes and arrangements. To sum it all UP, here is one group that is going nowhere but up! For, "Knickerbockerism" is here to stay. Jerry Fuller

"The Knickerbockers"

The Knickerbockers formed in 1964 as the Castle Kings. The group — Buddy Randell from the Royal Teens (he co-wrote 'Short Shorts'), vocals and saxophone; Jimmy Walker, drums and vocals; John Charles, bass; and his brother Beau, guitar — took their name from Knickerbocker Avenue in their hometown of Bergenfield, New Jersey. Discovered by Jerry Fuller, a moderately successful singer and very suc-cessful writer (`Travellin' Man', 'Young World', 'Over You' and 'Young Girl') and producer (Union Gap and Ricky Nelson), they were signed to Challenge in 1965. They soon showed their skills as mimics when their Beatles pastiche, `Lies' shot into the Top Twenty in the winter of 1965. Ful-ler's production of the Randell-B. Charles composition was perfect, sounding more like the Beatles than the Beatles. A follow-up, 'One Track Mind', made the Top Fifty in 1966 but then failure set in and the group disbanded. Jimmy Walker briefly 'replaced' Bill Medley in the Righteous Brothers before attempting a solo career on Columbia and Buddy Randell tried the same on Uni and then Paramount. Cutts Knight, of mixed black/Indian parentage, was born in Fort Scott, Kansas, in 1945. He moved to New York in 1961 where his own records on a number of labels (Gulf, Shell, R.S.V.P.) have since been overshadowed by an asso-ciation with Jimi Hendrix. Jimit Knight's 'intimate bio-graphy' of Hendrix was published in 1974, but was not weil-received by critics or fans. Knight's best solo record was `That's Why' on Gulf, which bubbled under the Hot Hun-dred in 1961. Jimi Hendrix played and sang on tracks, by Curtis Knight and the Squires made in 1965 for R.S.V.P.
