Margrit Imlau was born in Berlin on 11 November 1942. After the war, the family moved to the Bergisches Land near Cologne. Her father was Herbert Imlau, leader of various singing groups such as the Comedien Quartet and the Musikanten Quartet, so Margrit came into contact with music at an early age. She first sang in an amateur band and as a background singer for Udo Jürgens and Peter Alexander, among others.
In 1959 Margrit got her first recording contract. In the same year she was already in front of the camera with Peter Alexander. With "No, no, na, na, mh, mh..." and "Damit ich dir imponier'" she soon became one of Germany's teenage stars alongside colleagues like Conny Froebess and Heidi Brühl. In a duet with Peter Alexander, Margrit sang the successful titles "Mille mille baci", "Ein kleines Haus am blauen See" and "Sing, Jonny, sing". In 1962 she sang, again together with Peter Alexander in the Paul Abraham operetta "Die Blume von Hawaii".
In the mid-60s, Margrit Imlau withdrew from music and ended her singing career.
