Son House

Eddie James Jr. - jeder kennt ihn als Son House - wurde am 21. März 1902 in Riverton, Mississippi geboren. Nachdem er mehrere Jahre als Prediger gearbeitet hatte, wandte er sich Ende der 1920er Jahre dem Blues zu. Sein sehr rhytmischer und perkussiver Stil beeinflusste Zeitgenossen wie Robert Johnson und Muddy Waters.
Obwohl er für Paramount (neben Charlie Patton) aufnahm, blieb er außerhalb der Region des Coahoma County in Mississippi unbekannt.
In den frühen 1940er Jahren wurde er vom Forscher und Archivar Alan Lomax für die Library of Congress aufgenommen - und gab bald darauf die Musik für die nächsten zwei Jahrzehnte auf, nachdem er dauerhaft nach Rochester, New York gezogen war.

In den frühen 1960er Jahren entwickelte eine Gruppe von Folk- und Bluesenthusiasten, Studenten und Plattensammlern ein starkes Interesse an den Urvätern des Vorkriegs-Blues aus Mississippi. Son House wurde noch immer im Staate Mississippi vermutet. Die jungen Leute waren überrascht, als sie ihn schließlich unweit ihrer Universitäten an der Ostküste im Bundesstaat New Yorkin Rochester auftrieben.
Mit der Unterstützung seiner Entdecker begann die zweite Karriere von Son House. Er spielte für überwiegend weiße Studenten an Universitäten und in Cafés, nahm ein neues Album für Columbia auf und tourte durch die Welt, auch als Mitglied des American Folk Blues Festivals. Son House starb am 19. Oktober 1988 in Detroit, Michigan.

Während einer mehr als 60-jährigen Karriere hat Son House Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters und John Mooney, Bonnie Raitt, The White Stripes, John Hammond u.a. inspiriert.
