A special memory
Eddie James Son House is one of the most important blues singers and guitarists in history. Born in 1902 and deceased in 1988, he influenced blues greats such as Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.

In 2022, Forever On My Mind is a special remembrance of the legendary Father Of The Delta Blues: a new album of previously unreleased recordings.

Forever On My Mind comes from the archives of noted blues manager and historian Dick Waterman. It was recorded at a November 23, 1964 performance at Wabash College, a small men's school in Crawfordsville, Indiana, but never released. It includes the title song Forever On My Mind, which Son House never recorded in the studio, as well as never-heard versions of "Death Letter and Preachin' Blues.

The songs represent House's earliest recordings following his return to the spotlight after a hiatus of more than 20 years. Within months of his rediscovery by Waterman, Nick Perls and Phil Spiro, the once-unknown 62-year-old musician was thrust into the public eye at the time by a feature in Newsweek magazine and a series of performances at folk music festivals across the country.

For the release of Forever On My Mind, the recordings were restored to remarkable clarity by producer and Black Keys mastermind Dan Auerbach for Easy Eye Sound. Auerbach says of his work, "It's also part of my history - some of the first blues music I heard was Son House. I grew up listening to his Columbia LP, Father of Folk Blues. My father had that album and played it around the house when I was a kid, so I know all those songs by heart."

Son House

Eddie James Jr. - everybody knows him as Son House – was born March 21, 1902 in Riverton, Mississippi . After working as a preacher for several years, he turned to playing the blues during the late 1920s. His highly rhytmic and percussive style influenced contemporaries like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.
Although he recorded for Paramount (alongside Charlie Patton), he remained unknown outside the local Coahoma County region in Mississippi.
In the early 1940s he was recorded by researcher and archivist Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress – and gave up music for the next two decades after moving permanently to Rochester, New York.
In the early 1960s a group of folk and blues enthusiasts, students and record collectors developed a strong interest in the pre-war blues originators. Son House was still suspected in Mississippi, and the young folks were surprised to finally discover him not far from their universities on the east coast in the state of New York.

With the support of his discoverers, the second career of Son House began. He played for mostly white students at universities and in coffee shops, recorded a new album for Columbia and toured the world, also as a member of the American Folk Blues Festival. Son House died October 19, 1988 in Detroit, Michigan.
During a career spanning over more than 60 years, Son House inspired Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and John Mooney, Bonnie Raitt, The White Stripes, John Hammond a.m.o.
