This is one of the more unusual volumes in the entire "Dick's Picks" series, both in terms of the band lineup - neither Mickey Hart nor Donna Godchaux (who was off tour due to a baby) are featured here - and in terms of the circumstances of the recording, as the first disc opens with a version of "Morning Dew" that had to serve as both opener and soundcheck because the band was three hours late to the gig!

Interestingly, the final disc also ends with an encore of "Morning Dew" (in a particularly spectacular version), and one can imagine archivist Dick Latvala chuckling at this symmetry as he put together this 4-CD set, which includes highlights from two nights of a three-day performance at Boston Music Hall. Lovers of Keith Godchaux's keyboard work will get their money's worth, as he's more in here than on probably any other pick, and the "Mind Left Body Jam" on disc four, taken from Playing in the Band, is Playing in the Band is excellent.

And how often do you hear (on disc one) a FIRST set that starts with "Morning Dew" and ends with "Playing in the Band"?! And all with a uniquely mellow vibe... is the Dead's departure from the jazzy 1973 sound to the next step in their ceaseless evolution (the Wall of Sound is only four months away). Another good choice.
