Dick's Picks Vol. 11 was not only the first concert from 1972 to be released in this series, but also the first full concert from that year ever released by the Dead.

At the time it sparked controversy - it seemed (and still does!) as if every Deadhead had their favorite show from 1972 but as always Dick Latvala put together an (American) beauty culminating in one of the best Dark Star versions ever recorded with the bonus of a unique segue into Cumberland Blues This volume also features an interesting setlist with plenty of material from the debut solo albums by Jerry Garcia (Garcia) and Bob Weir (Ace), both of which had been released earlier that year.

Some people have claimed that this album surpasses Europe '72, but maybe it's better but maybe it's better to say that it complements that album, with a bunch of new material added to the repertoire and a new, post-pigpen lineup playing at a very high level on this side of the pond. Out of print for years!
