The Wizard of the West Coast: Wailin’ Maxwell Davis. His work as a saxophonist, bandleader, arranger and producer has earned him the title Father of West Coast R&B.CD1 is devoted to the best sides released by Davis in his own right between 1945 and 1956, while on CDs 2 & 3 this set concentrated on recordings (from the ’40s and ’50s respectively) on which Davis appears as accompanist, be it band member, session player or band leader…but always contributing an exciting tenor sax solo or two!
The labels with which Davis was associated represent a stunning role call of the major players in Post war R&B: legendary indies such as Aladdin/Philo, Modern/RPM, Imperial/Colony , King/Federal, Exclusive/Excelsior, Specialty, Down Beat/Swing Time and Black & White, as well as major labels like Capitol, Decca/Brunswick, Mercury and RCA Victor, and smaller operations like Supreme, Pacific, Miltone and Chesterfield.

Likewise the artists with whom Davis worked reads like a Who’s Who of Post War blues and R&B: Helen Humes, Amos Milburn, Charles Brown, Floyd Dixon, Johnny Otis, Joe and Jimmy Liggins, Gene Phillips, Lloyd Glenn, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Big Joe Turner, Little Willie Littlefield, Pete Johnson, Lowell Fulson, T-Bone Walker, Louis Jordan, Percy Mayfield, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Etta James and B B King. Davis also fitted in comfortably with the jazz scene (Charlie Mingus, Marshal Royal, Jay McShann, Lee and Lester Young, Ray Anthony and June Christy) and the rock ’n’ rollers (Oscar McLollie, Dolly Cooper, Donna Hightower and Rusty McDonald).
