Guitarist Norman Blake is one of the unsung heroes of 20th century folk music. With nine Grammy nominations and several dozen albums under his own name and with his wife Nancy Blake, his long and eventful career includes performances with Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson, contributions to Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline, and appearances on the seminal soundtrack O Brother, Where Art Thou? Day By Day is a collection of single recordings of original and traditional tunes, ranging from solo guitar and five-string banjo to ensemble performances with the Rising Fawn String Ensemble, showing Blake going back to the roots of country and old-time music. It's a rich, poignant farewell for one of folk music's most enduring voices.

geb. 10.3. 1938 in Chattanooga - Tennessee Record Labels: Flying Fish, Rounder, Takoma, County, Sonet Der Gitarrist und Sänger Norman Blake gehört schon seit vielen Jahren mit zu den vielseitigsten Talenten der Country Music Szene. Nach dem Besuch der High School schloss er sich den Dixieland Drifters an und zog durch die Radiostationen von Knoxville und Chattanooga, er spielte traditionelle Appalachian Music mit dem Banjospieler Bob Johnson und produzierte zusammen mit Walter Forbes eine LP. mit diesen alten Melodien ein. 1960 ging er mit June Carter auf Tournee und spielte mit Hylo Brown Dobro und Mandoline bei der Radiostation WWVA in Wheeling - West Virginia. 1961 wurde er zum Militär eingezogen und produzierte 1962 während eines Urlaubs das Album „12 Shades Of Bluegrass“. 1963 vom Militärdienst zurück, wurde Norman Blake Sessionmusiker für Johnny Cash, arbeitete an dessen ABC-TV-Serie mit und war auch bei Bob Dylan's ,Nashville Skyline“ L.P. mit dabei. Später ging er mit Kris Kristofferson, Joan Baez, John Hartford, Tut Taylor und Vassar Clements auf Tournee, dazwischen arbeitet er immer wieder an seinen Solo-L.P.s. Sein Gesangsstil erinnert manchmal etwas an Bill Clifton. Seine jüngsten L.P.s, bei denen sehr oft seine Frau Nancy am Cello mit- wirkt klingen häufig recht experimentell.
