Bobby Bare: The Mercury Years 3-CD

If one were to make a list of the great underrated country singers of the last twenty-five years, Bobby Bare's name would certainly be near the top. During his musical heyday, for a number of reasons, Bare never rose to the superstar stature of friends and contemporaries of his, such as Willie Nelson or Merle Haggard. To begin with, Bare has never been a prolific songwriter; and as such has never produced the same sort of readily identifiable body of original work. His forte has always been first and foremost, that of the song interpreter. Perhaps more important, Bare has never bothered himself particularly with the star-making aspects of his profession.

Raising a family, fishing and enjoying life in general often took precedent over his musical career. And more often than not, he has found greater satisfaction and creative outlet in the more workman-like, and behind-the-scenes aspects of music-making, such as producing, song publishing, and helping to cultivate new songwriters. [Kris Kristofferson, Shel Silverstein, Waylon Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver, Paul Craft, Mickey Newbury and Don Schlitz are just a few he has helped get started in the business.] As Chet Atkins, Bare's long-time producer during his years with the RCA label, once put it: "Bobby Bare is one of the greatest singers in country music. He's one of the brightest, most intelligent artists that I've euer worked with, though a lot of people don't see it because of that tobacco chaw and that hat pulled down over his ears. To me, he is comparable to someone like George Jones."

As Bare himself has commented about himself: "I'm just an old country boy. My style hasn't changed very much, if any, since I came into the business. Maybe people have sometimes thought it has, because of the variety of material I've used. Bat I am into songs, and believe that the song is everything. So I've always tried to pick the best. I've never worried too much about what subject they deal with." lt is Bare's almost uncanny ability to hear the potential hit in a new and untried song — frequently by an unknown writer — that, along with his disarmingly powerful and laconic baritone, served him best through the twenty-odd years when he was consistently an the country charts.

The evidence of this can be heard most clearly in the 67 songs »a few of which have never been released, and quite a few others which never been issued in the United States« that comprise this new Bear Family re-issue collection. Nearly every song heard here — whether a familiar classic from a songmaster like Tom T. Hall or Harlan Howard or an overlooked gern from some long-forgotten tunesmith — possesses some added flair of emotional coloring or clarity of insight, which Bare manages to bring to the surface, as only he can do...

Artist description "Bare, Bobby"

geb. 7. 4. 1935 in Ironton - Ohio Record

Labels: Fraternity, Capitol, RCA, Mercury, United Artists, Columbia, Rice, Ember, Intercord, Bare Works

Erster Hit: Shame On Me (1962) Erster Top Ten Hit: Detroit City (1963)

On Me“ 1962 seinen ersten Hit.
