Dave & Phil Alvin: Lost Time

(2015/Yep Roc) 12 tracks. Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin follow up their previous album, the Grammy nominated, Common Ground, with, Lost Time, a collection of blues songs from various artists that inspired the Alvin Brothers at a very early age. Common Ground focused exclusively on Big Bill Broonzy songs. With Lost Time the Alvin brothers dig in to the music of James Brown, Leadbelly, Willie Dixon, Blind Boy Fuller and Leroy Carr, among other greats. But they cover four songs by Big Joe Turner, as tribute to the blues legend t they met as teens, and who became their friend and mentor. Dave Alvin says, 'We tried our best to honor all these magnificent musicians, songwriters and singers as well as expose them to new listeners, and perhaps raise some ghosts up from their graves for a minute or two. And, hopefully, my brother and I have also again found some damn lost time.'

Als Sänger, Songwriter und Gitarrist mit einem scharfen Auge für die Details des amerikanischen Lebens und einem kraftvollen und leidenschaftlichen Stil hat Dave Alvin in den frühen 80er Jahren mit der Band The Blasters die amerikanische Roots-Rock-Szene angekurbelt und hat seitdem eine Karriere als Solo-Performer, Songwriter, Produzent und Sideman begonnen, die ebenso respektiert wie eklektisch ist.

Geboren und aufgewachsen in Downey, Kalifornien, waren Dave Alvin und sein Bruder Phil Alvin seit ihrer Kindheit begeisterte Musikfans, die sich in Vintage Blues, Country und Rockabilly-Sounds vertieften. Ihre Leidenschaft führte dazu, dass sie 1979 die Blasters gründeten, die mit der Energie und dem Feuer des Punkrocks Wurzeln spielten.

Mit Dave als Gitarrist und Hauptsongwriter wurden die Blasters zu Stars in Los Angeles und verdienten sich nach der Veröffentlichung ihres selbstbetitelten Albums von 1981 für Slash international einen treue Fangemeinde.

Dave verließ die Blasters nach ihrem 1985er Album 'Hard Line' und startete seine Solokarriere mit 'Every Night About This Time' aus dem Jahr 1987. Gesundheitliche Probleme haben Alvin für eine Weile ausgegrenzt, aber nachdem Dwight Yoakam mit Alvins Song 'Long White Cadillac' einen Hit erzielte, kehrte er mit dem 1991er 'Blue Blvd.' Album zurück. Er machte eine überzeugende akustische Leistung mit dem 1994er 'King of California', während er sein Interesse an traditionellem Folk und ländlichem Blues mit zwei von der Kritik gefeierten Veröffentlichungen, dem 1998er 'Blackjack David' und dem 2000er 'Public Domain - Songs From The WIld Land' verdoppelte.

In den 2000er Jahren wechselte Alvin zwischen elektrischen und akustischen Projekten hin und her, und 2014 traf er sich wieder mit seinem Bruder Phil für 'Common Ground': Dave & Phil Alvin spielen und singen die Songs von Big Bill Broonzy. Er dokumentierte eine weitere denkwürdige Zusammenarbeit mit Downey to Lubbock 2018, aufgenommen mit Jimmie Dale Gilmore.
