AUTHOR'S NOTE
This is the second edition of the Pop Annual which was first published in 1978. It provides a handy year by year cross reference of my Top Pop book which arranges the same era and data in alphabetical order by artist. Many chart buffs and record collectors will find that it serves as a perfect system by which to file their record collection.
Disc jockeys will find that it provides an extensive and interesting countdown of each year's charted hits. This updated version has the same basic format as the original Pop Annual, however, a number of new features have been added to make it even better and more informative (see 'The Years' explanatory notes). All of the chart data shown herein is compiled from the pop record charts of Billboard magazine — the #1 source of America's record popularity. The primary chart used for this research is, of course, the Hot 100. See 'Researching The Charts' for a complete explanation of the charts researched prior to the Hot 100 debut in 1958.

From pastime to passion to profitable enterprise, the growth of Record Research has been the outgrowth of Joel Whitburn’s hobby. Joel began collecting records as a teenager in the 1950s. As his collection grew, he began to sort, categorize and file each record according to the highest position it reached on Billboard magazine's charts. He went on to publish this information — first on individual artists’ cards, then in book form in 1970 — and a business was born.
Today, Joel leads a team of researchers who delve into all of Billboard’s music charts to an unmatched degree of depth and detail. Widely recognized as the most authoritative historian on charted music, Joel has also collaborated with Warner/Rhino Records in creating a series of 150 CD albums, plus five CD albums with Curb Records.
