Years in the Making by Loudon Wainwright III contains tracks from his 45-year career – over 2 hours of rare and unreleased material.
A 2-CD audio biography with live recordings, radio clips, demos, album excerpts, and more. There are snapshots from his early folk work with Kate McGarrigle, George Gerdes, and Steve Goodman, where they interpreted traditional songs and covered Woodie Guthrie and even Bob Dylan.
Then there are his forays into the rock ‘n’ roll world of the 70s and 80s with Leiber & Stoller's “Smokey Joe's Cafe” and his own “I Wanna Be on MTV,” and contributions from Suzzy Roche, Bill Frisell, Van Dyke Parks, Chaim Tannenbaum, and David Mansfield, as well as his sister Sloan and his children Rufus, Martha, Lucy, and Lexie.
The double CD comes with an elegant 60-page booklet. The wild creations of the brilliant young cartoonist Ed Steed from New Yorker magazine adorn the front and back covers, with detailed texts, dozens of illustrations of documents, and drawings by fans and friends in between.
