His extraordinary talent reaches new heights on “Lifetime Achievement.” Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1946, Wainwright initially studied acting at Carnegie Mellon University, but dropped out to take part in the Summer of Love in San Francisco and wrote his first song a year later in 1968. Shortly thereafter, he was signed to Atlantic Records before moving to Columbia Records, where he released “Dead Skunk,” which became a Top 20 hit in 1972 and made him famous overnight.
To date, in his more than 50-year career, he has done and experienced almost everything: a total of 30 albums, including his 2009 Grammy-winning “High Wide & Handsome,” several other Grammy nominations, an autobiography (“Liner Notes”), and countless film and television appearances.
