Limited treasure!
"The Jimmie Vaughan release "Strange Pleasure" appeared on CD around ten years ago.
Bear Family Records writes about the reissue as a double LP, among other things: "[...] Jimmie Vaughan, co-founder of the Fabulous Thunderbirds and older brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan, recorded one of the most fascinating blues/roots albums of all time in 1994! We at Bear Family Records are proud to release this exquisite Nile Rodgers production as an audiophile double LP limited to 1,500 copies for the first time worldwide on vinyl. [...] Mastered at the time by grandmaster Bob Ludwig, the album is pressed by DMM foils and plays at 45 rpm for perfect sound reproduction. Great songs like Boom-Bapa-Boom, Flamence Dancer, Tilt A Whirl, Two Wings and the beautiful tribute to his brother who was killed in an accident in 1990, Six Strings Down, were recorded with Bill Willis - Hammond B3 and George Rains - drums plus guest Dr John. [...]"
Eleven songs on the CD, twelve compositions on the double LP, which was released as 180 g vinyl (limited to one thousand five hundred copies) and is played at 45 rpm.
At the very end, on the second LP, Side B, there is a longer version of the number "Boom-Bapa-Boom". Longer in this case means around a minute. We are offered a little more guitar sounds and vocals. Either way, this track, with Dr John on the piano, is a great album opener in the shorter version, especially as the first track, which makes you happy from the very beginning of "Strange Pleasure" and eagerly anticipate the other songs.
The album number 1202, which was used for this review, is still a highlight today.
It shows how Jimmie Vaughan's album from back then is timeless. The music still sounds so fresh and although the two LPs keep you on your toes, there's no denying that the twelve songs have lost none of their appeal. In this context, "Flamenco Dancer" deserves a mention. The Latin introduction by René Martinez is first class, the groove is excellent and Bill Willis plays a great Hammond solo. Highlight!
Of course, his vocals and his imaginative, emotional fretboard rides are the cherry on the cake.
Dr John's piano contributions in the opener and the title track "Strange Pleasure (Modern Backporch Duente)" are excellent. The penultimate track on the double LP is particularly impressive. Recorded as a duo, it creates a very special atmosphere. Dr John also ventures into jazzy territory and the protagonist creates the appropriate mood on the acoustic guitar. "Strange Pleasure (Modern Backporch Duente)" is the most personal instrumental on this album.
The album, which is dedicated to his brother Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert Collins, contains another feast for the ears in the form of "Six String Down". Jimmie Vaughan almost solo, his vocals accompanied by the acoustic guitar and a chorus of Oren Waters, Terry Young and Kevin Dorsey that will give you goose bumps. The list of blues veterans is twelve-bar history.
The choral vocals are the special flavour in some of the songs.
Another marvellously groovy number is "Tilt A Whirl" with Joe Sublett on saxophone. This song is crowned by a series of solos from piano man Junior Brantley, Hammond player Bill Willis, woodwind player Joe Sublett and, of course, Jimmie Vaughan. A great song in which the saxophone in particular stands out. Super!
Jimmie Vaughan's "Strange Pleasure" can also shine in the new edition as a double LP."
