Mastered by grandmaster Bob Ludwig, the album is pressed off DMM foils and plays at 45 rpm for perfect sound reproduction.
Great songs like Boom-Bapa-Boom, Flamence Dancer, Tilt A Whirl, Two Wings and the beautiful tribute to his brother who died in an accident in 1990, Six Strings Down, were recorded with Bill Willis - Hammond B3, and George Rains - drums, plus guest Dr. John.
A gatefold cover with all song lyrics and Boom-Bapa-Boom in a longer version (not on original CD) complete this fantastic vinyl project.

‘Strange Pleasure', the first solo album by Texas guitarist Jimmie Vaughan, was released on CD in 1994. Produced by the brilliant Nile Rodgers and mastered by one of the greatest in the business, Bob Ludwig, 'Strange Pleasure' became the musical and sound model for many subsequent productions. It established Vaughan as a musician, singer and songwriter in his own right and was the beginning of his Tilt A Whirl Band based on chunky Hammond B3 accompaniment.

Jimmie Vaughan was born in Dallas in 1951. After his first teenage experiences in garage rock bands, he became interested in blues at an early age. His idols include Albert Collins, Freddie King, Albert King and Johnny 'Guitar' Watson. In 1974, he formed the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the seminal blues combo of the day, which reached No. 10 on the Billboard singles chart in 1986 with Tuff Enuff.

In 1990, Jimmie Vaughan left the band to work more closely with his younger brother Stevie Ray Vaughan. But SRV was killed in an accident in October 1990 ...

When 'Strange Pleasure' was released in 1994, Jimmie Vaughan had found his own style. 'Strange Pleasure' is a creative album full of feeling. It allows Jimmie to convey an eclectic range of moods and good humor, and Jimmie always plays a compelling guitar lick or solo as only he can.

A blues record at its core, the album stylistically breaks away from the rigid scheme, however, and shows influences of jazz, soul grooves and gospel vocals. Above all, the mature nature of Vaughan's vocals is astonishing. A terrific album, nominated at the time for a Grammy© as "best modern blues album".

In the '90s, there was probably a small vinyl edition in the Netherlands; apart from that, Bear Family is releasing the eleven songs from the original CD, supplemented by a slightly longer version of Boom-Bapa-Boom for the first time on vinyl.

To ensure that the powerful yet warm sound can be felt at its best, Bear Family's vinyl edition comes as a heavy double LP pressed on 180-gram vinyl that plays at 45RPM. This is as perfect as this great album can sound!

Besser klingt de Blues nur selten!

Nach dem tragischen Tod seines Bruders Stevie Ray beanspruchte Jimmie Vaughan damals nicht nur als Solist seinen Platz auf dem Bluesgitarristen-Olymp, er überzeugte auch als Sänger und setzte kompositorisch kreative Standards ... mit 'Just Like Putty' ist ein Texas-Blues-Diamant von größter Reinheit mit exzellent aufgebauter, messerscharf schneidender Gitarrenarbeit ... vertreten. Dass 'Strange Pleasure' nun als herausragend warm und dynamisch klingende ... Doppel-LP erschien, war im Grunde längst überfällig. Besser klingt der Blues nur selten!' Limitierte Kostbarkeit!

"Bereits vor rund zehn Jahren erschien die Jimmie Vaughan-Veröffentlichung "Strange Pleasure" als CD.
Zur Neuauflage als Doppel-LP schreibt Bear Family Records unter anderem: »[…] Jimmie Vaughan, Mitbegründer der Fabulous Thunderbirds und älterer Bruder von Stevie Ray Vaughan, nahm 1994 eine der faszinierendsten Blues/Roots-Alben aller Zeiten auf! Wir bei Bear Family Records sind stolz, diese exquisite Nile Rodgers-Produktion als auf 1.500 Stück limitierte audiophile Doppel-LP erstmals weltweit auf Vinyl zu veröffentlichen. […] Seinerzeit von Großmeister Bob Ludwig gemastert wird das Album von DMM-Folien gepresst und spielt mit 45 UpM für eine perfekte Sound-Reproduktion. Großartige Songs wie Boom-Bapa-Boom, Flamence Dancer, Tilt A Whirl, Two Wings und die wunderschöne Hommage an seinen 1990 tödlich verunglückten Bruder, Six Strings Down, wurden mit Bill Willis – Hammond B3 und George Rains – Schlagzeug plus Gast Dr. John aufgenommen. Elf Songs auf der CD, zwölf Kompositionen auf der Doppel-LP, die als 180 g Vinyl (limitiert auf tausendfünfhundert Exemplare) erschien und bei 45 rpm abgespielt wird.
Ganz am Schluss, auf der zweiten LP, Side B, gibt es die Nummer "Boom-Bapa-Boom" als längere Version. Länger heißt in dem Fall rund eine Minute. Wir bekommen etwas mehr Gitarren-Klänge und Gesang geboten. So oder so ist dieses Stück, mit Dr. John am Piano, in der kürzeren Ausgabe besonders als erste Nummer eine hinlangende Album-Eröffnung, bei der man schon ganz zu Beginn von "Strange Pleasure" erfreut ist und erwartungsvoll auf die weiteren Lieder gespannt ist.

Das für diese Rezension vorliegende Album mit der Nummer 1202 ist auch heute noch ein Highlight.
Daran lässt sich ablesen, wie Jimmie Vaughans Album von damals zeitlosen Bestand hat. Die Musik klingt immer noch so frisch und obwohl man durch die beiden LPs auf Trab gehalten wird, gibt es kein Vertun, dass die zwölf Songs nichts, aber auch gar nichts an Anziehungskraft verloren haben. In diesem Zusammenhang muss "Flamenco Dancer" Erwähnung finden. Die Latin-Einleitung von René Martinez ist erste Sahne, der Groove ausgezeichnet und Bill Willis spielt ein tolles Hammond-Solo. Highlight!

Logisch, seinen Gesang sowie seine fantasievoll-emotionalen Fretboard-Fahrten sind die Kirsche auf der Sahnetorte.
Wobei die Piano-Beiträge von Dr. John im Opener sowie dem Titelstück "Strange Pleasure (Modern Backporch Duente)" exzellent sind. Besonders der vorletzte Track der Doppel-LP hat es in sich. Im Duo eingespielt, kommt hier eine ganz besondere Atmosphäre zum Tragen. Dr. John begibt sich auch auf jazziges Terrain und der Protagonist sorgt für entsprechende Stimmung auf der akustischen Gitarre. "Strange Pleasure (Modern Backporch Duente)" ist das sehr persönliche Instrumental auf dem vorliegenden Album.

Das seinem Bruder Stevie Ray Vaughan sowie Albert Collins gewidmete Album enthält einen weiteren Ohrenschmaus in Form von "Six String Down". Jimmie Vaughan fast solo, sein Gesang begleitet von der akustischen Gitarre und einem Chorgesang von Oren Waters, Terry Young und Kevin Dorsey, der die Gänsehaut wachsen lässt. Bei der Aufzählung der Blues-Veteranen ist Zwölftakter-Geschichte angesagt.
Die Chorgesänge sind die besondere Würze in einigen Songs.

Eine herrlich groovende Nummer ist auch "Tilt A Whirl" mit Joe Sublett am Saxofon. Gekrönt wird dieses Lied durch aneinander gereihte Soli von Pianomann Junior Brantley, Hammond-Spieler Bill Willis, Holzbläser Joe Sublett und natürlich Jimmie Vaughan. Ein tolles Lied, bei dem sich besonders das Saxofon hervor tut. Super!

Jimmie Vaughans "Strange Pleasure" kann auch in der Neuauflage als Doppel-LP glänzen."

Exzellentes Reissue

Strange Pleasure, Jimmie Vaughans meisterhafte erste Soloplatte nach dem Ende der Fabulous Thunderbirds, teilt das Schicksal so vieler Alben aus den 90s, Sie ist selten, und wer ein Exemplar der ursprüinglich 1994 erschienenen LP haben möchte, muss clafiir heute tief in die Tasche greifen. Der Discogs-Schnitt betragt 87 Euro, der Preis der aktuell tatsachlich angebotenen Exemplare liegt weit darüber.
Abhilfe schafft die exzellente Reissue auf dem Label Bear Family, das Strange Pleasure zum ersten Mal überhaupt in einer nummerierten Auflage von 1.500 Stuck wieder in die Laden bringt.

Im Gegensatz zum Original auf Epic hat das auf Wiederveroffentlichungen spezialisierte deutsche Indielabel die Songs auf vier LP-Seiten verteilt, setzt auf 45 Umdrehungen pro Minute und macht den einst von Nile Rodgers eingerichteten und von Bob Ludwig bei Gateway Mastering in Portland perfekt ausbalancierten Klassiker damit zu einem wahren Hörgenuss. Auch die Pressqualitat der beiden schweren LPs lasst keine Wünsche offen und tragt dazu bei, dass die an Lightnin' Hopkins und Albert Collins geschulten Licks in Songs wie Just Like Putty überwältigend klingen. Die Höhepunkte unter ausnahmslos grossartigem Material setzen das akustische Six Strings Down und Love The World, das Vaughan gemeinsam mit Dr. John geschrieben hat, der auch als Gastmusiker an Piano und Bass mit von der Partie ist...
