A few words about the 'Town Hall Party' ..... The 'Town Hall Party' was California's biggest country music show between early 1952 and early 1961. The event was broadcast every Saturday night from a theater that looked like a converted barn in the middle of Compton, a suburb of Los Angeles. Up to 2000 fans came to the old Town Hall to see and hear the hottest top country musicians. The first hour was always broadcast live by KFI and later reached an even larger audience when NBC broadcast the show on radio. When the TV station KTTV entered the scene, the shows even lasted more than three hours. Jay Stewart (who later hosted the TV quiz show 'Let's Make A Deal') and Tex Ritter hosted the show, and the house band included all of the top names in West Coast country music, including Joe Maphis, Merle Travis, Skeets McDonald, Johnny Bond and Tommy Duncan. 

Guests included the Collins Kids, Carl Perkins, Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Wanda Jackson and Johnny Cash. The show was such a success that in 1958 Columbia Records released a 'Town Hall Party' album featuring many of the above artists. Unlike previous DVDs, which bundled various performances by individual artists, these new releases present complete shows - and capture even more intensely the atmosphere and excitement that captured the audience almost half a century ago. These releases also include the two shows with Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two as special guests, which were broadcast on November 15, 1958 and August 8, 1959. Bear Family had already brought these shows to the market as a special summary.

However, due to great demand, the two shows are now released completely and in full length as two separate DVDs - with all the other permanent members of the Town Hall party line-up. So let's go back in time, listen to and watch the top performers and simply enjoy these shows, which have not been seen since their original broadcast.

Town Hall Party - DVDs

Die 'Town Hall Party' gehörte Anfang 1952 zu den ersten Country Music Shows, die im amerikanischen Fernsehen ausgestrahlt wurden und lief dort bis zum Beginn des Jahres 1961. Sie kam jeden Samstag aus einem Theater in Compton, einem Vorort von Los Angeles. Die Bühne war hergerichtet wie eine alte Scheune – dies sollte dieselbe Stimmung vermitteln, die schon drei Jahrzehnte zuvor bei den Live-Shows vorherrschte, die über den Hörfunk gesendet worden waren.

Die Show – mit bis zu 2000 Zuschauern im Saal – wurde anfangs live über die Radiostation KFI gesendet. Die Verbreitung nahm jedoch enorm zu, als NBC die landesweite Ausstrahlung übernahm. Und als sich mit KTTV-TV das Fernsehen einschaltete, dauerten die einzelnen Shows sogar bis zu drei Stunden. Die Beliebtheit war dermaßen groß, daß Columbia Records 1958 die LP 'Town Hall Party' veröffentlichte – mit vielen Interpreten, die zum Stamm der Show gehörten.
