In the latest label spotlight in the “This Is” series - following acclaimed looks at Flying Dutchman and Fame - the Ace makers focus on Goldwax, which is celebrating its 60th birthday, and present the best recordings made during the soul label's short existence. The compilation not only shines a spotlight on James Carr, but also on his important label colleague Spencer Wiggins and the beautiful harmonies of the Ovations. These three acts were the mainstays of Goldwax and, along with the songwriting talents of George Jackson and Dan Greer, show why the label's influence is still important today. A catalog full of gems, from the earliest recordings of the hitmaker of “Why Can't We Live Together,” Timmy Thomas, to rarely recorded artists like Philip & The Faithfuls. This compilation also shows how strong the club and studio scene in Memphis was at the time, with recordings by Willie Walker, Percy Milem, Barbara Perry, Gene “Bowlegs” Miller and others, who only made sporadic recordings but were popular live performers. This is Goldwax comes with a fully illustrated booklet with liner notes by Dean Rudland. A perfect introduction to the label at the beginning of its seventh decade. Available as a double LP and CD!
