Kansas City Country Rockers is just that. Rocking music played by country boys from the Big K. Redlita Records have chosen sixteen killer tracks from the fifties and early sixties and we think the end result is among the best rockabilly albums ever released. Kansas City has no great reputation for country or rock music, but this album will change all that. For sure, the total sales figures of the original singles probably didn't have too many noughts on them, but the quality is undeniable and somewhat surprising.

The recordings come from the Choice, R. Brass and KCM labels, and all were centred on and distributed by Bill and Leroy Davidson's wholesale record warehouse and studio. Apart from the Davidsons, country bass-player and song -writer Harold Hassler was important in organising and recording many of this artists included here. At first, he and Davidsons operated the Choice label in the second half of the fifties, and made good records by Cliff Shepherd, Chuck Bowers and Tennessee Jim.

Then, in 1960 they formed R Records and continued the good work with Zig Dillon, Conny and the Bellhops and Larry Good. The sounds they made belong more to '55 than the early sixties, and though they are great for us to listen to today this could be why the label was out of business by 1963. Tennesee Jim McDonald and Cliff Shepherd left Choice in 1958 to form KCM Records. Among their recordings are two all-time greats by Jim McDonald and The Strangers. Brass Records was formed by singer Gene McKown in association with a local company in 1957 and put out some fine country music.
