This collection illuminates music that is often invisible in today's world - the incredible world of global recordings that are not jazz, blues, country, rock 'n' roll, R&B or "classical."

Excavating Shellac: An Alternate History of the World's Music features 100 recordings and 100 stories in a comprehensive, illustrated book with detailed, contextual mini-histories of both musical origins and the beginnings of the recording industry, touching on the complexities of colonialism, economic goals, and cultural tourism.

Almost all of the titles have never been reissued. This collection is an extension and addition to Jonathan Ward's website Excavated Shellac, a unique treasure trove of music, history, and data on rarely heard and rarely seen 78 rpm recordings from around the world.

Featuring music and musical styles from six continents and 89 different countries and regions, recorded between 1907-1967.

100 audio recordings + a 186-page book with essays and commentary by Jonathan Ward. This box set was nominated for the GRAMMY AWARD for Best Historical Album in 2022.

Jonathan Ward, who also produced Opika Pende: Africa at 78 RPM, Excavated Shellac: Reeds, and Excavated Shellac: Strings, sets a new standard for listening to, enjoying, and understanding old recordings from around the world.
