BLACKENED AGAIN! This second volume brings us four examples of how Bo Diddley's jungle beat mercilessly took possession of the tender spirits of white youth.
Jo Ann & Troy, actually singer Jo Ann Campbell with her then husband, songwriter and guitarist Troy Seals, recorded several singles for Atlantic. In 1963, they released this great version of Uncle Bo's Who Do You Love?", an irresistible bopper halfway between Twist and Early Sul.
Bobby Crown & the Kapers are best known in the rockabilly world for their 1959 single One Way Ticket. The band remained active over the next few years. In 1966, they released their third and final 45 single with Diddle-Daddy on the lead. What a cover! It could have been perfectly reworked by Bo Herseld.
Im Doval & The Gauchos were one of the first show bands in rock and roll history. Formed by California singer Jim Doval, they performed in heavily Spanish-influenced costumes and developed a powerful rock 'n' roll backed by double drums. In 1965 they recorded a fabulous reworking of Bo Diddley's Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut, adding a deep garage touch.
Finally, we switch to Goldband Records in Lousiana, where blacks and whites performed with the same lineup, so much so that it's hard to tell one from the other on their recordings. It was there that Dell Mack recorded one of the most amazing and wild versions of Bo Diddley's classic You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover. It's hard to believe there's a white man behind this ferocity!
