"Obviously it's the first letter of my last name, but I liked that when you say it, it's also the word 'You.' For me, that's the listener, that's the audience. The sound of words is a big thing to me – Ripcord was like that, Fuse was like that. Fuse and Ripcord denoted a certain kind of energy in the word to me. 'Graffiti' to me felt very uninhibited, artistic, liberated expression. 'Graffiti' to me is a blank canvas and pure artistic expression upon that." (Rolling Stone, April 2018)

Keith Urban wurde am 26. Oktober 1967 in Whangarei, Neuseeland geboren. Der neuseeländisch-australische Sänger, Songwriter und Gitarrist ist ein Crossover-Musiker in den Bereichen Country und Pop.

Kindheit

Aufgewachsen ist er in Caboolture, Teil der Greater Metropolitan Region Brisbane in Queensland, Australien, wo er mit seinen aus Neuseeland eingewanderten Eltern auf einer Farm lebte. Schon früh kam er mit Countrymusik in Berührung und gewann im Alter von acht Jahren eine Talentshow. Im Alter von zwölf Jahren spielte er bereits mit einer Band in Clubs.

Plattenvertrag

1990 unterschrieb Keith Urban einen Plattenvertrag in seiner Heimat und veröffentlichte sein erstes Soloalbum. 1992 zog der Musiker nach Nashville, Tennessee und knüpfte Kontakte zur Musikindustrie. Mit der Band The Ranch produzierte er 1997 ein Album. Sein Durchbruch kam im Jahr 2000 mit dem Soloalbum Keith Urban. Im Jahr 2001 gewann er den Horizon Award (Young Talent Award) der Country Music Association und den Top New Male Vocalist Award (Best New Singer Award) der Academy of Country Music und wurde für sein Gitarrenspiel für den Grammy nominiert. Keith Urban's Musikstil ist eine Mischung aus Country, Rock und Pop. Zu traditionellen Country-Melodien spielt er Akustikgitarre, Rocksoli auf der E-Gitarre oder Banjo. Das Album Golden Road erschien 2002 und wurde in den USA zwei Millionen Mal verkauft. Be Here folgte 2004.

Privatleben und Auszeichnungen

Am 25. Juni 2006 heiratete Urban die amerikanisch-australische Schauspielerin Nicole Kidman in einem Vorort von Sydney. Ihr erstes Kind wurde am 7. Juli 2008 in Nashville geboren. Eine zweite Tochter wurde am 28. Dezember 2010 in Nashville geboren. Sie wurde mit Hilfe einer Leihmutter durchgeführt. Wegen Alkoholproblemen ging Urban im Oktober 2006 zu einer freiwilligen Entzugsbehandlung. 2007 ging er wieder auf Tournee, wo er mit Alicia Keys beim Live Earth Konzert in New York City am 7. Juli 2007 auftrat. Am 15. Mai 2011 erhielt Keith Urban einen Stern auf Nashvilles Music City Walk of Fame und am 21. April 2012 wurde er Mitglied der Grand Ole Opry.

The Voice und American Idol

Urban war Jurymitglied und Coach in der ersten Staffel von April bis Juni 2012 in der australischen Vocal Casting Show The Voice, die auf Nine Network ausgestrahlt wird. Urban kam in der zwölften Staffel von American Idol zu Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj und Randall Darius Jackson als Juroren. Im Jahr 2014 nahm er neben Jennifer Lopez und Harry Connick junior auch als Juror an der 13.
