The Peruvian soprano Yma Sumac was the "Nightingale of the Andes", the voice of birds and earthquakes, the most unique and lively of the record producers. Her different world vocal gymnastics, a freaky four-octave series delivered with sensitivity and power, were unprecedented in their time and still sound like nothing in the world. Her natural versatility was so great that the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla advised her to sing spontaneously and avoid formal music lessons at all costs.
