Known as the „Silver Fox“, the American singer and pianist blended country, rhythm & blues, jazz and rock'n'roll in a unique way. The Smash sessions gathered here show him between soulful, swinging numbers and heartfelt ballads – artistically mature, years before his great country-pop world hits of the 1970s such as „Behind Closed Doors“.

Charlie Rich

Amerikanischer Country- & Western-Sänger. Studierte an der Universität von Arkansas Musik und gründete die Gruppe „The Velvetones'. Musikalisch brachte Charlie Rich Rhythm & Blues und war so erfolgreich, daß er bald seine eigene, wöchentlich ausgestrahlte TV-Show bekam. Dann folgte der Wechsel zum Country & Western, den Charlie Rich jedoch nicht in reiner Form brachte, sondern ständig mit Rhythm & Blues, Gospel- und Rockelementen anreicherte. ln Amerika schon seit Jahren ein Topstar der Countryszene, schaffte er 1973 fast sensationell mit dem Song „Behind closed Doors' auch in Europa einen Millionenhit. Ein Jahr lang standen die englischen Fans kopf.

1974 war das Charlie-Rich-Jahr in England: 7 Singles wurden veröffentlicht, alle kamen in die Hitparaden, 5 LPs wurden auf den Markt geworfen - es war wie ein Schluß- oder Ausverkauf. Noch nie hatte eine Plattenfirma die Nachfrage nach einem Sänger so konsequent genutzt und den Markt gefüllt. Als hätte man es geahnt: 1975 war alles schon wieder wie ein Spuk vorbei. Einen Charlie Rich schien es nie gegeben zu haben. In Amerika wurde er mit dem Grammy als einer der besten Country- & Western-Sänger ausgezeichnet.
