Celebrated guitarist Popa Chubby & Friends celebrate a guitar legend on “I Love Freddie King”. Special guests include Joe Bonamassa, Mike Zito, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Eric Gales, Albert Castiglia and Arthur Neilson.

“To say that I've dreamed of making this record for 30 years would be an understatement,” writes Popa Chubby in the album's liner notes. “I remember being 18, playing guitar for a year or two, and an older cat in the neighborhood telling me to listen to Freddie King. I immediately listened to “Hideaway” and “Have You Ever Loved a Woman” and my mind was changed forever. Years later, I signed with Sony Records and covered “Palace Of The King” and “Same Old Blues” from the album Getting Ready. But it wasn't until early last year that I got the muse and the idea to have some of the best pickers in the world celebrate the Texas Cannonball with me.

“I started putting together a list of songs. I had to include some of the early guitar instrumentals, I had to include the Shelter Records stuff from the Leon Russell era. And I absolutely had to include the Burglar record from the Mike Vernon era. Freddy was a versatile artist who covered different genres and the blues and outshone everything he touched. He was pure, unadulterated soul, sweat and mutton chops.

“I wanted to do this music justice more than anything and put together a core band with some of the best musicians in the business: Michael Merritt on bass, Andrei Koribanics III on drums and Mike DiMeo on keyboards.

“We met at G. Bluey's Juke Joint in Long Island City for a three-day retreat and recorded 11 of Freddie's best songs. Then we were joined by Joe Bonamassa, Mike Zito, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Eric Gales, Albert Castiglia, Arthur Neilson and V.D. King, who all made incredible contributions to these recordings.

“I can tell you it's been a journey! Halfway through making these recordings, I was paralyzed by a rare spinal condition, so there was a 90 percent chance I would be paralyzed. I had surgery and am back on my feet and recovering!”

Popa Chubby summed it up when he declared: “I love Freddie King! We all love Freddie, The Texas Cannonball, the missing link between blues and rock. To quote Eric Clapton, “I was mainly into white rockers, then I heard Freddie King and I knew where I belonged. I was over the moon.” And I can say that I came across “Just Pickin” in 1976 and it changed my soul forever. So the year is 2024: “I tell Zito I want to make a Freddie tribute record - can you help me get some guests? Give me a wish list,” says Zito, and we set to work. The result is a spectacular offering that takes in every phase of Freddie's vast repertoire with some of my favorite musicians. And yes, we all love Freddie King”.
