Mary Kay Place is best known for her acting career and for playing aspiring country singer Loretta Haggers on the legendary American television series Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. But Place was far more than an actress playing a country singer – she was a genuinely talented vocalist. Her two 1970s albums, Tonite! At The Capri Lounge, Loretta Haggers and Aimin’ To Please, remain fascinating snapshots of a very special period in American country music.

Raven Records’ The Ahern Sessions 1976–1977 combines both albums on one CD, giving listeners a total of 20 tracks and more than an hour of music. The sessions were produced by Brian Ahern, best known for his acclaimed work with Emmylou Harris.

The guest list is extraordinary: Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Rodney Crowell, James Burton, Albert Lee, Byron Berline, Nicolette Larson and Herb Pedersen are among the musicians featured. Their contribution gives the recordings a warm, spacious and beautifully produced 1970s country sound, combining traditional country instrumentation with excellent guitar work, steel guitar, dobro and rich harmony vocals.

Highlights include “Vitamin L,” “Baby Boy,” “Gold In The Ground,” “All I Can Do,” “Dolly’s Dive,” “Cattle Kate,” “Even Cowgirls Get The Blues” and “Something To Brag About,” the latter recorded as a duet with Willie Nelson. “Baby Boy” became a successful country/pop hit, while Place’s first album earned her a Grammy nomination.
