Los Angeles-based SoCal country singer Sam Outlaw presents his pedal steel-influenced, new wave-inspired album titled Popular Mechanics. Outlaw, who wrote seven of the album's eleven tracks on his own, blends the sounds of his favorite '80s artists - Kenny Loggins, Cyndi Lauper, Tom Petty - with stories influenced by the great innovators of the 20th century and the engineers of his own pedigree.

The ambitious direction of Popular Mechanics may seem like a sudden shift from Outlaw's country-heavy albums Angeleno (2015) and Tenderheart (2017), which earned appearances on CBS Saturday Morning's Anthony Mason, NPR, The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal and more, but the gears actually began turning in early 2018 after Outlaw shelved new material he'd been recording in Southern California.

After moving across the country to Music City that same year, Outlaw found unexpected inspiration during a visit from his father, a mechanical engineer, that led him to turn his focus to the technological side of music production.
