Mittelpunkt der Gruppe waren die beiden Caldwell Brüder Tommy und Toy und der Name der Band ist ein Zufallsprodukt: Während einer Probe in einem alten Lagerschuppen fand man einen Schlüssel mit der Aufschrift „Marshall Tukker“. So fand die Band zu ihrem Namen. Die Marshall Tukker Band verfolgte zunächst etwas die musikalische Richtung der Allman Brothers Band, fand aber dann rasch zu einem breiteren Spektrum. Die Bandmitglieder bezeichneten ihre Musik gerne als „Progressive Country“, „Country Jazz“ oder „Bluesy Rock 'n` Roll“. Die Gruppe war in den Pop- wie auch in den Country Charts vertreten, doch war sie immer mehr eine L.P.-Formation geblieben. Nach dem Tod von Tommy Caldwell, der an den Folgen eines Autounfalls starb, wurde die Band etwas umorganisiert, was ihrer Qualität jedoch keinen Abbruch tat.
