After the somewhat showy It's Not Big It's Large, Lyle Lovett also retreats to quieter territory on Natural Forces, devoting the bulk of the 11-track album to other composers. Covers are not uncommon for Lovett, but he hasn't spent this much time singing other people's songs since 1998's Step Inside This House, and he draws on some of the same composers as before, choosing tunes by Townes Van Zandt and Vince Bell, while co-writing It's Rock and Roll with Robert Earl Keen. As before, Lyle tends toward mellow, moody songs, with Tommy Elskes' sarcastic blues "Bohemia" being the liveliest of the bunch. He chooses to add some humor and pace to Natural Forces through his originals, particularly the bawdy, rollicking "Pantry" and the dirty jump blues "Farmer Brown/Chicken Reel." These aren't scattered throughout the record, but serve as anchors for a record that follows its own quiet, idiosyncratic path that grounds the album and keeps things endearingly unpredictable.

Natural Forces showcases Lyle's unwavering songwriting alongside amazing songs from such Texas writers as Eric Taylor, Don Sanders, Tommy Elskes, David Ball, Vince Bell, Robert Earl Keen, and the legendary Townes Van Zandt. Lyle Lovett, ein Sänger, der zunächst Zeitungswissenschaft und Deutsch studierte, trat mit seiner Gitarre immer wieder mit viel Erfolg in den Clubs seiner Heimat auf. Dann ging er nach Europa, vervollständigte seine Deutschkenntnisse in Rothenburg und Passau und ging zurück nach Amerika, von dem Willen beseelt, sich im harten Music Business durchzusetzen. Nach Stationen in New York und Houston, verhalf ihm schließlich Guy Clark zu einem Schallplattenvertrag. Schon die erste L.P. erregte Aufsehen und die erste Single landete unter den Top Twenty der Country Charts. Lyle Lovett, ein Künstler, der sicherlich seinen Weg machen wird.
