The career of American singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson did not follow a straight line. The son of a high-ranking military man with Scandinavian roots studied literature, came to Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship and wrote his first songs in England, but without success. He became a captain in the U.S. Army and a helicopter pilot.

In 1965 he moved to the Mecca of country music, Nashville, and earned his first money at the CBS studios - as a janitor. Dave Dudley, Roy Drusky and others recorded songs of his, the breakthrough came when Johnny Cash released Sunday Morning Comin' Down in 1970. At 34, Kristofferson recorded his debut album. This SACD presents the stereo and quadraphonic mixes of the following four albums.

Kris Kristofferson, ein Sänger und Komponist, der in den 70er Jahren Nashville ein neues Gesicht gab und die „Music City USA“ auch für sehr viele Pop-Fans interessant und akzeptabel machte. Als Sohn eines Air Force Generals wohnte Kris Kristofferson lange Zeit in Kalifornien, besuchte verschiedene Universitäten, darunter auch die von Oxford - England und schrieb unter dem Pseudonym Kris Carson Novellen und Songs. Als sich kein Erfolg einstellte, meldete sich Kris Kristofferson zum Militär und war zeitweise als Hubschrauberpilot auch in Deutschland stationiert. Er trat als Unterhalter in Soldatenclubs und schickte unablässig seine selbstgeschriebenen Songs an die diversen Verleger in Nashville.

1965 verließ Kris Kristofferson das Militär und ging selbst nach Nashville, arbeitete in den Columbia Studios als ,Mädchen für alles“ und flog zwischendurch Ölbohrer und Ausrüstungen in den Golf von Mexiko. Als Roger Miller dann Ende der 60er Jahre mit ein paar Kris Kristofferson Songs , darunter ,Me And Bobby McGee“ Erfolg hatte, zeigte sich ein Silberstreif am Horizont. Nach Miller sang auch Charley Pride ,Me And Bobby McGee“ und als gar Janis Joplin 1971 mit diesem Song einen Superhit schaffte, da war Kristofferson plötzlich akzeptiert. Er wagte sich selbst an die Interpretation seiner Songs und hatte auch auf Anhieb Erfolg. Die Lieder, meist Geschichten, die Mitten aus dem Leben gegriffen waren, hatten Tiefgang und zwangen zum Zuhören.

Kris Kristofferson wurde ein Star, der auch in zahlreichen Filmen Haupt- und Nebenrollen übernahm. Mit Ehefrau Rita Coolidge, von der er inzwischen wieder getrennt ist, sang er im Duett und entfernte sich dann Ende der 70er Jahre merklich von der Country Music Gleichzeitig begann auch sein Stern zu sinken. Seine immer verschlüsselteren Texte kamen an den Realismus der früheren Jahre nicht heran. Die Arrangements bewegten sich oft im Unverbindlichen und Seichten. Die 80er Jahre sahen dann Kris Kristofferson nahezu Schallplatten abstinent, zumal seine bisherige Firma Monument in Schwierigkeiten geraten war und die Tore geschlossen hatte. Erst 1986 unterschrieb er wieder einen Vertrag bei Polygram. Ob es ein echter neuer Anfang und ein Comeback für Kris Kristofferson wird, bleibt abzuwarten.
