Mother Naomi and daughter Wynonna had an amazing run of 14 number one singles through 1989, making them one of the most popular country acts of the 1980s. Their music combined elements of traditional country harmony singing, bluegrass and Appalachian folk with pop, rock and sophisticated contemporary production.

In addition, Wynonna's powerful, bluesy, often sexy lead vocals established her as one of the finest country singers of her time. But even more important than her widely accessible sound - or her considerable visual appeal - was her empathetic understanding of working-class and small-town women, which she earned through a long, uphill battle of her own.

Naomi und Wynonna Judd, kurz „The Judds“ genannt, waren die Sensation des Jahres 1983. Das Mutter/Tochter- Duo aus Kentucky faszinierte durch ein akustisches Arrangement, einen brillanten Harmoniegesang und neues, zeitgenössísches Songmaterial. Traditionalisten und mehr Pop-orientierte Fans waren gleichermaßen von diesem Sound begeistert. Schon 1984 der erste No. 1 Hit, dem weitere Spitzenreiter folgten. 1984 bekamen sie den Horizon Award der CMA, 1985 wurde ihr Hit ,Why Not Me“ beste Single des Jahres, gleichzeitig wurden sie beste Gesangsgruppe, ein Award, den sie 1986 gleich noch einmal in Empfang nahmen. Von ihren ersten drei L.P.s erreichten die zweite und die dritte Platin-Status und beim MIDEM Festival 1987 in Cannes vertraten sie ihre Plattenfirma bei der weltweit über TV verbreiteten International Gala Show. Zweifellos, die beiden Judds waren Senkrechtstarter. Erst im Mai 1979 waren sie nach Nashville gezogen. Naomi hatte gerade ihr Examen als Krankenschwester absolviert und sich in der Freizeit mit dem Music Business von Nashville beschäftigt, da erhielten sie die Chance, mehrmals in der Ralph Emery Show aufzutreten. Das war die Initialzündung. Der Zauber, der von den Live-Shows dieser beiden Damen ausging, faszinierte gleich mehrere Manager und Produzenten. RCA machte schließlich das Rennen. Für Naomi und Wynonna Judd, für Mutter und Tochter, ist ein Traum wahr geworden.
