In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, four cousins, Lowman 'Pete' Pauling (bass and guitar), Clarence Paul (lead), Anthony Price (baritone), Windsor King (first tenor), and their friend William Sanders formed a spiritual group called the Royal Sons. In 1948 they came north to record their first record 'Bedside Of A Neighbor/Journey's End' (Apollo 253). This group consisted of Pauling, Paul, King, and Eugene Tanner and his brother, John. This group later reformed into the '5' Royales.

The group had a string of rhythm and blues hits including two number one records in 1952. Although they scored equally with both jump tunes and ballads, most of their di-verse material was written by their own Loman Pauling. In 1954 they joined King Records where they recorded their only pop hits,'Think' and 'Dedicated To The One I Love'. Both of these songs later became even bigger hits for James Brown and the Shirelles respectively. The '5' Royales re-corded fifty-one selections for King Records.
