A Texan from Houston, George Ensle studied classical guitar as a teenager and, equipped with these technical skills, moved from Houston to Austin in 1966 and found his way to the university. In the then flourishing local folk scene, he came into contact with Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clarke and countless other musicians. In the early seventies, he toured colleges with Nancy Griffith and Linda Haisley and ended up in the folk clubs of his former hometown of Houston. Ensle was discovered at a singer-songwriter competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1977. Three years later, his debut album, Head On, was released. In the meantime, he taught music in underprivileged school communities and continued to write songs.

These songs have been recorded on fifteen albums over the last several decades. Ensle is the mentor of Will T. Massey and was involved in his first recording sessions. In addition to Massey, Garry P. Nunn and Bob Cheevers have covered Ensle's songs, and in 2008 he was nominated for Singer-Songwriter of the Year in Texas.
