Dzyan formed as a quintet in 1972 and recorded their self-titled debut album after just two months, which was released on Aronda, a small Bad Homburg label run by producer Günther Müller.

The original line-up, which never performed live, disbanded after just a few months. Bassist Reinhard Karwatky founded a trio shortly afterwards, which took over the band name. Karwatky, guitarist Eddy Marron and drummer Peter Giger signed with Bacillus / Bellaphon, Peter Hauke (Omega, Nektar, Jeronimo, among others) produced, Dieter Dierks was in the studio at the controls. On “Time Machine” (1973), the first album for Bacillus, Dzyan plays virtuoso jazz rock that is occasionally reminiscent of John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, especially on the 18-minute title track. The trio does not lack a certain herbaceous rawness. On their second Bacillus long-player “Electric Silence” (1974), the trio celebrated their kraut jazz rock to perfection. In its review of the album, the leading specialist magazine Jazz Podium judged that with “Electric Silence”, Dzyan had made a name for themselves as “probably the best German band” in the field of jazz rock. Achim Breiling from the online magazine “Babyblaue Seiten” judged a few years ago: "‘Electric Silence’ is certainly one of the strangest, but also one of the most impressive and independent things that has been produced in Germany in the border area between jazz and rock.
