Their two Atlantic albums, plus singles, b-sides, acoustic versions, live recordings and more.
“THE ALBUM ‘SPEND THE NIGHT’ BY THE DONNAS IS SO MUCH FUN YOU'LL WANT TO STAY FOR BREAKFAST!”
That was the advertising at the time of the release, even though the four girls were “every mother's nightmare and every schoolboy's dream”, as Spin magazine wrote. Spin also said they were “the coolest band in America”, while Kerrang! described their "fierce, glorious rock ‘n’ roll... oozing star power and irresistible pop-rock".
Inspired by the punky pop-rock of the Ramones and the Runaways, mixed with the classic rock of Bachman-Turner Overdrive and KISS, they signed to Atlantic in 2002, who proclaimed they were “inspired by AC/DC, the Sex Pistols and Madonna, Donna A's lipstick snarl vocals meet Donna C's and Donna F's angry chugging and Donna R's early Guns n' Roses guitar wall.”
The band's 2002 album ‘Spend The Night’ (CD1) saw them appear on US television shows and play the main stage of the 2004 Lollapalooza tour, and their punky sound led to appearances on a number of movie soundtracks (including Dodgeball, Mean Girls, Elektra and Herbie Fully Loaded) and computer games, as well as soundtracking Budweiser, Levis and Rolling Stone ad campaigns.
“Gold Medal” (CD2, 2004) reached #76 on the Billboard 200 and continued the commercial hard rock sound of ‘Spend The Night’, with the singles ‘Fall Behind Me’ and ‘I Don't Want to Know (If You Don't Want Me)’. Stylus judged the Donnas “incapable of playing in anything but the key of badass”, while Rolling Stone said the band “play solos that would make AC/DC's Angus Young proud”.
CD3 completes all the recordings the quartet released between 2002 and 2005, adding raucous live sets recorded in Boston in 2003 and three tracks recorded for XFM, along with B-sides of singles ‘Hyperactive’, ‘Rock 'n’ Roll Machine', ‘Mama's Boy’, ‘Play My Game’ and ‘Done With You’, plus acoustic versions of ‘Fall Behind Me’ and ‘Don't Break Me Down’. There is also a cover version of Billy Idol's “Dancing With Myself” and “Please Don't Tease” from the movie New York Minute.
