The American singer and songwriter Dion DiMucci, or Dion for short, was born in 1939 in the Bronx, New York City. With his vocal group Dion & The Belmonts, he landed the first doo-wop and R'n'R hits in the late 1950s. He left the Belmonts around 1960 and they continued to work without him.

Dion is best known for his solo career with great pop hits such as Lonely Teenager, Runaround Sue, The Wanderer, Ruby Baby and Donna The Prima Donna. He skillfully combined elements of doo-wop, R&B and rock 'n' roll and matured into a versatile and influential figure in the early years of rock music. Over time, he continued to develop as an artist, successfully exploring various genres such as blues and folk.

Dion's influence on the industry and popular music has been significant, his contributions from the early era of rock 'n' roll have cemented his place among the greats of popular music. In 1989, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Ein verliebter Teenager

Der Stolz der Bronx, Dion und The Belmonts verkörpert das Beste im italienisch-amerikanischen Doo-Wop, das mittlerweile in den Bezirken von New York City blüht. Leadsänger Dion DiMucci beschreibt den bulligen Sound seines Quartetts als "schwarze Musik, die durch ein italienisches Viertel gefiltert wird und mit einer Einstellung herauskommt: "Yo! Es ist wahr. Es hat all diese Elemente. Aber der New Yorker Italienisch-Amerikaner, es gibt ein Element von,,Yo! Redest du mit mir?" Es gibt diese Art von Idee, als ob man alles wissen sollte. Ich weiß nicht, woher ich diese Idee habe, denn sie ist absurd. Aber wie auch immer, das ist die Einstellung. Ich würde sagen, es ist eine Zuversicht."

DiMucci versammelte seine Belmonts aus den Straßen seines Heimatlandes und versammelte den ersten Tenor Angelo D'Aleo, den zweiten Tenor Fred Milano und den Bariton/Bass Carlo Mastrangelo. Ihr ansteckendes I Wonder Why war ein Pop-Hit im Frühjahr 1958 auf den frisch geprägten Laurie Records der Brüder Bob und Gene Schwartz, und sie fingen gerade erst an (es ist auf unserer vorherigen Compilation). Für ihren nächsten Laurie-Ausflug gaben Dion und seine Kumpane Fats Domino's I Can't Go On (Rosalie) eine rockige Lektüre, aber es war der butterweiche Balladen-Flip No One Kn, der die Charts im Spätsommer machte und I Wonder Why auf Platz 19 verbesserte. Vor Ende des Jahres haben sie wieder mit einer weiteren zarten Ballade, Don't Pity Me, gespielt.

Brill Building Bewohner Doc Pomus und Mort Shuman waren dabei, sich auf eine unglaubliche Songwriting-Rolle einzulassen, nachdem sie Fabian gerade seinen ersten Smash gegeben hatten. "Ich wollte'Turn Me Loose' machen", sagt Dion. "Ich mochte'Turn Me Loose'." Das produktive Duo hatte auch für Dion und The Belmonts etwas Besonderes. "So wie'Ein verliebter Teenager' hereinkam, hatte Ricky Nelson den armen kleinen Narren." Also habe ich es zu den Belmonts gesungen, und sie haben damit angefangen", sagt Dion. "Dann hatten Mort Shuman und Doc Pomus ein anderes Lied, ich vergesse, wie es hieß." Und sie haben es irgendwie in "Teenager In Love" geändert und das zusammengesetzt. Also war es irgendwie wunderbar, einfach nur auf dieser Decke zu sitzen, der Sound, den die Gruppe machte. Aber auf jeden Fall, wenn man'Der arme kleine Narr' hört, kann man hören, was ihn inspiriert hat. Waxed March 3, 1959 und ausgestellt im selben Monat mit der sanften Ich habe geweint, bevor auf dem Flip, A Teenager In Love war ein # 5 Pop Smash in diesem Frühjahr. Dion und die Belmonts waren nun Teenager-Idole. DiMucci hat den Wert seiner Songwriter weise nie unterschätzt.

"Doc Pomus war wie ein Vater für mich, sehr sogar." Er hat mich wirklich ermutigt. Ich vermisse ihn. Er war einfach ein toller Kerl. Ich habe nur gerne mit Doc geredet. Mort Shuman, den ich liebte. Mort Shuman war absolut unglaublich", sagt Dion. "Er war ein toller Kerl, mit dem man rumhängen konnte." Er war so interessant. Ich liebte es, mit ihm zusammen zu sein."

Average Sound Quality

This CD is a good compilation of Dion's hits on Laurie and Columbia records. As expected the booklet has good info and pictures, especially the comprehensive discography.

If you are familiar with Dion's CDs released by Ace Records then you will notice that the sound quality could be better or at least the same as what you get on Ace's CDs. I'm not saying that it is bad but it does not seem that the tracks were remastered from the original master tapes. For example we miss the prominent handclap on Runaround Sue and Lovers Who Wander.

There are also two flaws: I Got The Blues was record by Dion and The Belmonts, not Dion alone. And the version of Donna the Prima Donna is the not the original 1964 Columbia release but the alternate version released on the Dion's Bronx Blues cd.

Overall this CD is ok but Bear Family could have done better.

If you have to own only one CD of Dion then this is definitely the one to get

I know I've posted this cd earlier this week when it was delivered in the mail. Now I have to post it again during my first listen. That's because I'm convinced this is the best release of 2024, it can't be beaten!
Sure I already owned every song but hearing all these great songs back to back is something else. No interruption by mediocre tracks. Gem after gem! Dion's swagger is getting across better than ever. So great.
