British rock band The Kinks' debut album 'Kinks' is now reissued as a 2CD deluxe edition. Alongside The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Who, The Kinks were one of Britain's most popular bands of the 1960s and part of the 'British Invasion'. In terms of ideas, they are considered the founding fathers of punk and britpop.

Together with one of Beat music's most important music producers - Shel Talmy - The Kinks recorded their first studio album "Kinks" at Pye Studios in 1964. The album contains among other things l one of The Kinks' great singles, 'You Really Got Me' (top 10 on the UK and US charts). Singer Ray Davies wrote this song, which also featured Jon Lord (Deep Purple) and Jimmy Page (Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin). This deluxe edition contains, besides the original album, the original mono recordings, alternate takes, songs and interviews from the BBC sessions and singles tracks.

Gegründet 1964 in London Die Kinks gehören - obwohl seit längerer Zeit aus den Single-Hitlisten abwesend - zu den beständigsten und wichtigsten Gruppen der englischen Rock- und Popszene. Die Kinks entwickelte unter dem leitenden Einfluß des Bandleaders und Autors Ray Davies bereits in den Anfangsjahren des Beat-Zeitalters einen eigenen Aggressivstil, der sich in den frühen Hits der Gruppe („You Really Got Me', „Louie Louie', „All Day And All Of The Night', „Tired Of Waiting For You' u.a.) anzeigte. Schließlich entwickelte sich das Quintett (neben Ray Davies sein Bruder Dave [voc + g], John Dalton [b], Mick Avory [dr] und John Gosling [Keyboards]) zu einer musikalisch ausgereiften Truppe, die mit dem sozial-satirischen Werk „Arthur“ oft mit den Who und deren Pop-„Oper' „Tommy“ verglichen wurde.

Ray Davies wandte sich nun immer sarkastischer dem Showgeschäft zu, das er in seinen folgenden Songs schärfstens kritisierte. Nach den Erfolgen der Kinks-LPs „Muswell Hillbillies' und „Everybody's in Showbiz ~ Everbody's A Star' schrieb Ray Davies das Musical „Perservation', nach dem die derzeit letzte Langspielplatte von den Kinks, „Soap Opera', aufgenommen wurde.
