Gegründet 1968 in London Deep Purple, die den Rockfans seit Anfang 1973 monatelang Stoff zum Rätseln und Spekulieren gaben, manövrierten sich durch Umbesetzung und ein neues Konzept geschickt wieder aus der musikalischen Sackgasse heraus, in der sie nach 8 Jahren des Erfolges schließlich steckengeblieben waren.

Leadsänger lan Gillan stieg aus und schloß damit eine Phase ab, die er seit 1969 mitprägte. Mit ihm verbindet man Hits wie „Black Night', „Strange Kind Of Woman', „Speed-King' und „Woman From Tokio'. Bassist Roger Glover, auch seit 1969 dabei, stieg ebenfalls aus. Der neue Bassist, Glenn Hughes, war früher Leadsänger bei „Trapeze' und beteiligt sich auchjetzt an den Vocalparts. Einiges Aufsehen erregte die Auswahl des neuen Leadsängers. Aufmerksam verfolgten lnsider, wie sich namhafte Musiker um den Platz bemühten, bis die Nachricht kam, daß ein bis dahin unbekannter Sänger sie alle aus dem Rennen geschlagen habe: David Coverdale, 25 Jahre alt.

lm Herbst 1974 erhielten David und Glenn ihre erste Goldene Schallplatte, für die anderen war es die siebente Trophäe dieser Art in Deutschland: „Burn', das erste gemeinsame Album nach der Neuformation, wurde am 19. 9. in München anläßlich der Deep-Purple-Deutschlandtournee in Gold verliehen.
