Skeeter Davis & NRBQ: She Sings, They Play (CD)
After working with her sisters in the group The Davis Singers, Skeeter Davis embarked on an impressive solo career. With nearly 40 singles charting between 1957 and 1974, her recording of "The End Of The World" (produced by Chet Atkins) reached #2 on the Pop and Country charts, #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts and #4 on the R&B charts in 1962. Think about that!
Since Skeeter had already transcended perceived genres, the thought of collaborating with the musical Pandora's Box known as NRBQ shouldn't be hard to fathom. Terry Adams' discovery of the David Sisters 78 RPMs led to the tracks being included in early NRBQ setlists. The pairing was intentional. She Sings, They Play was a natural pairing and was released in 1985 to critical acclaim. "We had more fun recording this record. What other group would think of playing 'Someday My Prince Will Come' in 4/4 time?" asked Skeeter Davis.
She Sings, They Play returns nearly four decades after its original release, remastered and featuring six previously unreleased bonus tracks - two studio outtakes appear on the LP, while these and four other live recordings are now available on the CD/digital version. The packaging includes updated artwork, photos from the sessions and insightful liner notes by John DeAngelis.

Skeeter Davis
After the tragic death of her singing partner, Betty Jack Davis, Skeeter carried on, first with Betty Jack's sister and then as a solo performer. She signed on as one of Ernest Tubb's supporting acts and joined the Opry. Along the way, she divorced husband #1 and married WSM dee-jay Ralph Emery. Slowly, the hits began to come; the first was an answer to Hank Locklin's Geisha Girl.ProducerChet Atkins kept the faith during some lean years. Answer songs were in vogue, and Don Robertson and Hal Blair wrote their own sequel to Please Help Me I'm Falling.Floyd Cramer was on hand to replicate his piano part and Skeeter double-tracked her vocal to good effect. Hank Garland echoplexed his guitar and played fabulously understated fills around Skeeter and Floyd Cramer. While Robertson and Blair make little secret of the fact that they'd been cheating on their wives (and Robertson's 1960 divorce seemed to bear it out), the sequel was chocked full of family values. In the fall of 1960 I'm Falling Tooreached #2 on the country charts and #39 on the pop charts.
